can student visa or WP have a share in a ltd company

hi all
just need some clarification on student visa.

student visa can not open a com - limited or sole prop. but can they have a percentage of share in a limited co.

Wouldn't that come under 'engage in business' which I think is disallowed..

Having a share is just investment and I believe you can invest as long as you do not engage in operation side of it. You can not run the company but I think you are ok to invest. Others can correct if wrong.

sashank, I think that is exactly right, and would add this.

We are not told much about the proposed investment. For all we know the proposal is to buy some shares on the Stock Exchange, and clearly that would be totally OK.

One test for this sort of thing is: could you do it if you were outside the UK? From what you have told us, you could, and so you are not going to be able to do less if you are inside the UK.
