Refom of immigration act is under consultation - there could be 1- 5 years "probationary citizenship" after 5 years with HSMP or work permit and 2 years with spouse visa.
We need to protest, there is feedback form in Home Office site, dead line is 14 May.

the probationary citizenship is really another period of temporary visa to slow down the migrant progress. It is not, as its name implies, a taster of citizenship.
The paper itself points out migrants on average are net fiscal contributors. It would do nothing to improve quality of migrants coming in, only to lose best skilled people to other more welcoming countries like Aussi and CA.
Compulsory "volunteer" work during the probationary period will easily lead to abuse.
And it would be unfair for the rule to be introduced retrospectively -- as has happened before when the qualifying period for PR changed from 4 to 5 years.
