Yes, called this number 0300 123 2253. First she asked me the same question - do you have any proof that you were allowed to work ? I said - my visa was the proof as every student visa holders were allowed to work provided that they apply for NI. She said, write a cover letter explaining that, send your NI with the letter, Case worker will write you back if he/she needs more information. Clearly those who answer the call doesn't have any idea either...

On the form you have to mention last 10 years work history, I started working from 2007, which I mentioned.

Did your university provide any letter when you first applied for NI. If you still (!) have that letter, that might help proving that you are authorised by the university to work and apply for NI

Anyone faced this kind of problem ? Not sure what to reply back to HO.
This may be a case of incomplete training of the caseworker, who are confused by the (admittedly often confusing) paperwork issued by the home office. That is not unusual, sometimes you have to explain to them how to do their job.

Assuming you are correct (2005 is a long time ago, and the law changed several times), you need to find the piece of legislation (probably secondary legislation) that states your right to work, and send them a copy. I doubt the caseworker will accept this, but with a bit of luck it will go to a senior caseworker who understands the situation.

Thank you all. I told them o covering letter - "During 2005 students were allowed to work as long as they apply for NI" and attached my NI with the cover letter.
