Medicals and Police checks??

Post by monty85 » Thu Jan 31, 2008 3:53 pm

Hi all,

For the partners visa do you need to get your medicals and character checks done before you apply for the visa??

Some sites say yes and some say the office will notify you if they want you to have them done!

I'm lost with this!!

I think a lot of the reason for confusion is that you don't have to get your police checks and medicals done before you apply, but you can take a gamble if you want to. They normally ask you to get the medical and police checks done, after you have applied. Some people take the gamble in order to save time.

In fact as I understand it the Department of Immigration advises against getting them done beforehand. Probably on the basis that you risk unnecessary expenses as your medical and police checks may expire before they can be assessed or the possibility that your application is rejected before they even get to assessing your medical and character status.

MEDICAL

The medical situation is causing a lot of confusion. You do not need to get your medicals done in advance. Apart from the visa application itself this is probably your next most expensive item. Your not required to complete them and pay that expense until requested by your case officer.

You can of course get them done at some stage throughout the waiting process but that depends on how confident you are about the application made and how smothly it's going. Many people do this after acknowledgement of the application, you get your file number and so on. This can help as clearly they then have your meds and X rays in advance instead of having to request them from you. same applies with Police checks. Remember you have 1 year from the date of the earliest item of these two (meds and Police checks) to get an answer, or else you have to repeat that particilar process. More expense, so be careful how you judge it.
