Child born outside the UK

Post by yvesempeno » Thu Sep 07, 2017 3:46 am

HI,

I need some clarification on what i need to do or need to have after having my baby born outside the UK.

My baby was born 3 weeks ago here in The Philippines, and I am a British Citizen who was born outside the UK. I have a British Passport and I have been living in the UK for the past 15 years.

My question is what is my next move? Do i register my baby as a British Citizen born overseas or do i apply for a British Passport for her first?

Regards
Yves

All applicants have to enroll their biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo taken). For children under 6 years of age, it is only the digital photo.

I am a British Citizen who was born outside the UK.
How did you become a British citizen?

Were you born to a British parent outside the UK?

Or were you born outside the UK, moved to the UK and acquired British citizenship by naturalisation?

I moved to the UK in 2002 and become a Citizen through naturalization.

Ah. Thanks to secret.simon for asking a very significant question. The answer changed my incorrect assumption that you were British by descent.

Child is therefore automatically British by descent.

Child cannot register, but may apply for a British passport directly.

Were you naturalised before the birth of your daughter?

Were you married to the mother of your daughter at the time of her birth? If not, was she married to anybody else?

If you were married to the mother of your daughter at the time of her birth, the documents needed are
a) Your Naturalisation certificate
b) The certificate of your marriage to the mother of your daughter
c) Your daughter's birth certificate listing you as the father

If not married to the mother of your daughter at the time of birth, when was your daughter born? If after 10th September 2015, you will need a DNA test certificate stating that you are the biological father of your daughter.

There may be issues if the mother was married to somebody else at the time of birth of your daughter.

Many thanks again for the prompt reply.

Yes my daughter was born 3 weeks ago, and i have been married to her mother since last year.

Those 3 are the only supporting documents i need? Because it is very confusing on the guide which supporting documents i would need to apply for my daughter's passport.

It will likely be a lot simpler to get the child a British consular birth certificate and then use that document to get a British passport.

A consular birth registration certificate is optional. However, it's another layer of documents, possibly helping to protect against future problems that some Surprised Brits may face.

You can try doing both, but it depends on which set of documents is more difficult to obtain. It may need to be your wife who should submit the passport application on behalf of your daughter. Do you live in the Philippines? Your opening post implies not.

Follow JAJ's link for the consular registration of the birth.

For the passport application, try googling the process to apply for a Btritish passport, and at first restrict your attention to the site ".gov.uk". You may need to look at some Philippines-specific sites for interpretation of the documents required.

It would be recommended to get the consular birth certificate first, then apply for a British passport.

A consular birth certificate can be used as evidence of British citizenship for passport purposes.

Thanks for the many replies!

Would it be ideal to register her birth here in The Philippines as i am still here with my family, or do it when i get back to the UK?

Kind Regards
Yves
