visa for a carer???? is this possible??

hi all, I have heard from a friend that he knows someone that was given a long term visa in order to come to the UK from Pakistan in order to care for her sick sister who had mobility problems. I haven't heard of this route
...does anyone have any information as to which type of visa this could be?? Its not a visitor visa and as far as I know my friend seemed to imply it was a permanent stay although I am not convinced. thanks all
