Working time regulations and TIER 2 General

Hello everyone,
I work 40 hrs a week on tier 2 visa general. I was thinking of doing extra work for earnings. I know 20 hrs extra work is allowed . But i also found that working time regulations or european workinv time directive allows maximum 48 hours a week. How do these two rules fit togather? I dont understand. If somebody can clear this question please. Thanks

Usually your employer has the document that you can sign to opt out or it is part of your documents with your contract.

And will this opt me out of total hours only or everything? Am i still supposed to make sure i am taking adequate rest 24 hrs in a week or i can work all days of a week?
