First time Irish passport after Naturalisation

Post by lana1234 » Mon Dec 04, 2017 11:39 am

Hi guys,
did anyone receive their first Irish passport less than 1 month after applying? I came to the passport office and was told "to wait 20 working days although maybe it will be ready sooner". I have a travel ticket for Xmas and worried that the passport wont be ready before that. At the naturalisation ceremony last week they mentioned something about the passport times to be reduced because the ceremony was suppose to be in October.

Did they give you a date when the passport is ready?

not really, just said 20 working days which makes it 3rd of January, and to track it online, since it can be ready before that...

I have the same issue and applied for a passport immediately after the ceremony. I am very sure the guy from the passport office at the ceremony said that they will facilitate people who are travelling over Christmas but I was given a delivery date for passport by the end of December. I told them that the guy at the ceremony said they'll facilitate travel and I was told that they are pretty sure that the guy at the ceremony said they will "NOT FACILITATE" people who are travelling over Christmas. I am dumbfounded!!!

Did the guy at the ceremony not say it takes around 4 to 6 weeks for the passport to be issued?
I'm going home for Xmas as well but decided to do my passport upon my return to be on the safe side.

Could you get an emergency passport from your country in case the Irish one is not ready on time?

Best of luck!

@lana1234: I had to cancel my tickets because I couldn't get a straight answer out of the passport department. I've tried email, phone, chat, everything and will keep checking. They don't want to commit a date of delivery and on the system the passport is stuck at same status for over a week. They don't seem to want to help.

@Jota: I was told not to travel on my original passport without a GNIB card or Irish passport. I was told that I may have trouble at immigration when coming back to Ireland so I didn't want to take the risk. I am very sure the guy at the ceremony said that it takes 4 to 6 weeks for a passport but they will try and facilitate people who are travelling. I guess he didn't mean it!

@iamok: So sorry to hear you had to cancel your trip due to this mess.

I had a trip booked for after the original ceremony (16.10) and I had no problem coming back in without my GNIB, I presented my invitation to the re-scheduled ceremony in Nov17 with my original passport and they had no issue letting me back in.

I was told by GNIB and INIS to have my Naturalization Certificate and my original passport when coming back to Ireland after my Xmas/NY's holidays and it should be fine.

@Jota: Thanks for the message. I contacted GNIB office today and I was informed that I can get a Stamp 6 on my current passport to allow me to travel over Christmas. I didn't even know there was a stamp 6! I just need to carry a copy of my Citizenship certificate with me (as you said). I can still re-book my flights so I am hopeful after the development today. :)

@lana1234: Try contacting GNIB office to get an appointment for getting a Stamp 6 on your current passport so you can travel over Christmas. See link below:

@lana1234 - I am the same as you. The application status hasn't moved since I applied on 28 Nov. I got a stamp 6 from GNIB office last week and will be travelling based on that. I contacted passport office and was again told it is unlikely that I will get my passport before Christmas and in fact it may be the New Year before I get it. Best of luck!

@amiamorgan - I guess you are quite lucky that your application is moving. They seem to have a big rush on passports again due to Christmas. Best of luck and hope you get your passport on time.

Did you get the stamp 6 Free of Charge or did you have to pay the fee of 300 euro?
