Sudden death before ceremony

Post by eagleeyed » Mon Feb 26, 2018 9:02 am

Hi everyone

I hope you can help. I’ve got my citizenship ceremony on Wednesday (28 Feb) morning. I just found out my mother passed away last night and so I will need to travel out of the country (and EU) for funeral/burial. She passed away in the US so it would be about a week before her body is repatriated. What should I do re ceremony/returning BRP? Shall I have ceremony and then call up passport office and plead for a faster service?

Thanks for your help.

I am sorry for your lost

My advice is just to call the council and cancel your ceremony and re book it again for next month. You can travel on your ILR because you won't be British citizen until you have done the ceremony

I am so sorry for your lost.

I believe the above optionis best. Cancel the Ceremony and travel on your ILR, once you're back then you should book the ceremony and take Oath.

Don't 'cancel' the ceremony as such, just postpone it by a couple of months.
