In which cases do kids born abroad to a British Mum need registering as BC?

When do kids born abroad to a British mother need registering as British citizens and when don't they?

A member of our German group asked about getting a passport for two German born young children, one born before and one after marriage, to a German father and British mother in Germany but now resident in the UK.

Googling this throws you to the Home office website advising you to use MN1 for registration as a British Citizen but when you fill in the "am I a British citizen" form it says you likely don't have to register and can apply for a passport straight away.

So under which circumstances would a child born abroad to a British other than descent mother need to be registered?

It depends if the mother is British born or British by descent and how old the children are and when they were born.

If born before 1st January 1983 or born before the mother was a British citizen.

Cheers guys, when Googling this you always end up at "Children born outside the UK
You may be able to apply for your child (under 18 years of age) to be registered as a British citizen, for example if you’re a British citizen but your child was born or adopted outside the UK."

Thankfully the passport office were able to advise
