That’s what I would like to know also, I left work as my child was born with downs and I’m her carer whilst stay at home looking after our baby boy also, my wife works full time as IT support and gets good wage. Or once the new system is up and running does 5 years automatically give settled status?

No one can answer this question, because there is not enough information out there yet.
This is the information that is available at the moment:
https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-ci ... ligibility
Note that:
"Full details of the scheme are still subject to approval by Parliament."

2.3. Otherwise, those applying under the EU Settlement Scheme will not be required to
show that they meet all the requirements of current free movement rules, such as any
requirement to have held comprehensive sickness insurance or generally to detail the
exercise of specific rights (e.g. the right to work)
under EU law. The UK has decided, as a
matter of domestic policy, that the main requirement for eligibility under the settlement
scheme will be continuous residence in the UK
