Getting Passports Back Early?

I applied for a tier 2 visa and paid the priority fee to have it processed in 5-7 business days. If the application process takes any longer than that, I may need my passport back. Will I need to cancel my application or will it simply be delayed? How long after you request your passport do you think it will be returned? Any insight on how this might play out is greatly appreciated.

As far as I know you can pay additional 80euro(price depends on the country where you applied) and get your passport back same day most likely, without cancelling the whole process, you will just need to bring it back to get your visa after they make a decision on your application. I am not sure, but I think that can only be done if visa center in your country sends photocopies to HO instead of real documents, like they do in Germany, for example.
So best option is to clarify this with your visa center I think.
