Made redundant... worried I'll be booted out

Post by Kay » Thu May 15, 2008 10:43 am

Hi gusy

I am in a right state at the moment... I dont know where to turn.

I am Australian but have been living in Ireland since December 2000 and have made a life for myself here. I have been in emloyment on a work permit all that time but was made redundant this month.

I have been trying to speak to someone at the dept of immigration for 2 days (have been on redial from when they open at 10am to when they close at 12.30pm) and cant get through.

I have been frantically looking fo work in my specialised field (sub-editing) but have had no joy.

I really don't know where to turn and am terrified my life as I know it is over.

Can anyone advise me.... please? I'm thinking i must qualify for long-term residency.

many thanks

Kay

There is no reason to panic. Yet.

First of all, nobody is going to boot you any time soon; if your registration/visa expires, go to Garda and explain to them that you were made redundant (bring redundancy letter) and currently looking for a job. They should extend your registration.

Secondly, do apply for LTR, if you were working since 2000, you definitely qualify. It takes time (like 2 years ;() to process, so it won't help you right now, unfortunately.

Thirdly, if you find a job, your new work permit application will be processed faster (look for 'redundancy' on DETE website: http://www.entemp.ie/ ). And no usual work permit restriction apply in case of redundancy.

Thanks so much Victor.

My registration ends in October. I think it will be a while before I get a job. I have literally emailed every known newspaper in the land seeking work :D

What do you mean normal restrictions dont apply if I have been made redundant?

I have been trying to get info on LTR but cant get hold of anyone at the immigration dept. Is it any wonder there is such a backlog of applications when there is no-one to man the phones. 3 days a week for 2.5 hours. I can't believe it! I'll never get through at this rate.

i called a different number to find out if I could pop in and talk to someone and was told no point so dont bother :(

Am beside myself with worry, but trying to not stress.

if anyone knows where'd I'd get infor on LTR applications I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again Victor

    Thanks Victor

So I send that off when (if? :D ) i get the new job.

So in the meantime I just look and apply for the LTR.

What does 'The ineligible job categories do not apply' mean? I'm a little confused.

Sorry, so many questions...this has been causing me so much stress I'm barely sleeping and just want to get it sorted - or know for a fact I wont be booted out after nearly 8 years.

if you have 8 years legally staying in ireland. other then LTR. you can apply to GNIB for a stamp that will give you unlimit staying in ireland.

    here is the link

take a look. i dont know how long it takes gnib to give you this stamp, but i guess the best people to check with is the immigrant council of ireland in dublin 2 or migrant right center in dublin as well

    good luck!
