When to extend tier 2 visa? based on COS end date or BRP valid until date?

Hello everyone,

I have a question which might be silly to some but I am really confused, I first came in to the UK on a tier 2 general visa which was issued on 04/01/2016

When I applied my application was for 3 year tier 2 general visa, I remember that, and back then I got a BRP card which says date of issue 04/01/2016 and valid until 30/04/2020 which I thought was odd as it is much more than my 3 year visa

My cos that i came with said work start date 01/11/2015 and end date 31/09/2019

my question here is do I have to extend my visa before January 2019 which is the end of my 3 years or do I have to extend before 30/04/2020?

The valid until date on the BRP card, is it the end date of my visa or is it the expiry date for the card?

If my BRP card says its valid until 04/2020 and my COS end date is 12/2019 then can someone tell me when should I be applying to extend my visa? I'm on tier 2 general

You can apply to extend your visa before your BRP expires. Your residency is based on the validity of your BRP
