Citizenship through naturalisation and self-employment

Post by mithralaya1 » Tue Dec 11, 2018 9:17 pm

Hello Forum,

I am currently in the process of applying for citizenship through naturalisation. Since November everything went online, so using one of the service centres too.

I was permanently employed till 17th Sep 2018 this year and recently turned self-employed. I have all the payslips, P45, P60 for my old employment.

But for my self-employment I have no official document yet as my accountants informed that its not a complete year yet. The latest time I will get something from HMRC is next March.

In the documents section Home Office want me to submit
"most recent tax year account statement and HMRC returns as a proof of self-employment"
If I want to make my application before Christmas, is there an alternative document that I can submit?

Many thanks,
Karthik

As you are non-EU you only need your passport(s) with stamps in/out to support residency.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.
Please do not send me private messages asking for advice.

Thank you,

So during online application should I untick the box where it say HMRC returns on document checklist?

I tried this and the application validation doesn't let me go further.

Many thanks,
Karthik

Also for your information, I ticked both "A director" and "Self employed" on the type of employment

I was in a similar situation and submitted my limited company's certificate of registration, at the advice of an immigration lawyer. My application is still pending though, so I don't know if it will be enough. Then again, as was pointed out, it's not strictly needed anyway.

Minor point: If I understand the terminology correctly, you aren't both a director and self-employed. It's either one or the other. Director for a limited company. Self-employed if you're a sole trader. If you untick "self-employed" in the online form, it won't ask you for HMRC statements in the checklist, if I recall correctly. I was a bit confused at first and had both ticked as well initially.

Hi sfljiaf, Yes I unticked self-employed and just had Director ticked. Now it's not asking for HMRC returns on the documents checklist.

But is that correct?

If you dont mind, how long have you been waiting for your application?

It should be correct, I think, assuming you are a limited company director. But it's just my understanding, based on what HMRC told me about how to register to do my taxes. Maybe ask your accountant what your status is, to be safe? It does strike me as odd that they don't ask for proof of being a director, but maybe they just look it up on companies house themselves? As I said I submitted the company registration anyway. Can't hurt.

I submitted my application less than a month ago - so I would not expect to have heard anything from them yet.

Thank you sfljiaf, It clears all my doubt. Yes, I am a company director and employed to my company. I also emailed my accountant explaining the process.

Thanks for confirming your application progress too.

One last question,

What is "Tax office reference number" for a company director on the application? Is it self-assessment UTR? or something else? Dose it have some kind of format?

Thank you

I think that's what I put - no idea though if that's what they want.
