Permanent residence vs settled status?

Hello,
my situation is as follows:
This month I made 5 years living and working in the UK, so I have the option to apply for permanent residence. I would like to apply for British citizenship next year.
If I get the settled status now and skip the permanent residence, could I still apply for British citizenship next year?

Yes, one year after you got Settled Status.
