Where do you get the rumour from?
You cannot turn up and get PR or ILR straight away. Ignoring EU rouyte, you need pre-settled status first and after five year you qualify for settled status (ILR).

Ok looks like they have thought that applying NI number will help them to work in the UK after Brexit and start their 5 years time for settled status.
I just wanted to clarify this.

The NI number does not confer any specific immigration status - it is the main reference for the tax system.

After the 29.3.19, settled status will be linked to NINO. So, it will be linked to immigration status for Settled Status holders one day.

This sounds like a mashup of the concept of Indefinite Leave to Remain (Infinite ALL) and the Settled Status app being available for everyone in January...

... Plus people having to insert their NINO in the app. Get a NINO and reclaim infinity!!!

Hi,
I agree I mixed the infinite and indefinite.
So do you advise for any EU citizen to get an NINO regardless of if they are in UK now or not?
thanks,

You need to be IN the UK to get a national insurance number. This is required to work.

I'm not advising anything. I'm nonchalantly making fun of the misunderstanding
As far as I understand you can only get a NINO once you are in the UK.

it is technically true that you need to be in the for NINo but actually you do not need to be living in the UK to get one. you basically need to be present during the interview and provide an address to receive the number.
