Appropriate SOC code

Post by pintokhan17 » Fri Apr 05, 2019 4:12 pm

Hi Everyone,
Would someone be able to guide me to an appropriate SOC code for a Virtualization and Data-storage Administrator position? Would it fall under 3131 or is it possible to be filed under 2139? JD is:
o Manage the Storage infrastructure, Virtualization, and Windows Server estate.
o Diagnose and resolve technical issues around storage and virtualization.
o Develop, test, and document new systems, policies and procedures.
o Liaise closely with Data Archiving Team, and IT Security Team.
o Automate processes through use of scripts (Powershell).

Is 2139 specifically limited to QA and Cyber-Security only?

SOC 2139 is on BOTH the shortage occupation and the non shortage occupation lists.

Non Shortage occupation is the below Appndix J.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration ... illed-work
2139 Information technology and telecommunications professionals not elsewhere classified Example job tasks • undertakes the testing of software, systems or computer games for errors, identifies source of problems and proposes solutions; • develops, implements and documents test plans for IT software, systems and computer games; • develops quality standards and validation techniques; • makes recommendations concerning software/system quality; • examines IT system for potential threats to its security and integrity and draws up plans for disaster recovery if security is compromised; • deals with and reports on breaches in security. Related job titles: • IT consultant • Quality analyst (computing) • Software tester • Systems tester (computing) • Telecommunications planner Salary rates: New entrant: £22,700 Experienced worker: £31,100 [Source: Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) 2018]
Shortage occupation is the below Appendix K, which is only for jobs as stated below.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration ... ation-list
2139 Information technology and communications professionals not elsewhere classified Only the following job in this occupation code:

Cyber security specialist employed by a qualifying company, where the job requires a person with a minimum of five years’ relevant experience and demonstrable experience of having led a team.
SOC 3131 is an RQF level 4, not eligible for Tier 2 anymore as far as I understand. You must be at RQF level 6.

Hi CR001,
Thanks for the quick reply.

My HR and Legal/Immigration team says the job-description I posted above would come under 3131 and not be sponsorable. I'm trying to find out if it can fall under the non-shortage occupation list for 2139, and thus be RQF6, but the description/job titles listed in it seem only specifically targeting QA and security.

I've tried looking through the ONS coding website as well to try and figure out where virtualization and data storage would fall in, but no luck.

Do you already hold a Tier 2??

Unclear what your circumstances are??

It is your employer or potential employer that decides the SOC, not you, and the RLMT has to reflect this genuine vacancy accurately.

Sorry about the confusion. I am on a Tier-4 dependent visa, currently working in this position. My visa expires in a few months time, and I'm trying to convince my employer to go the Tier-2 sponsorship route with RMLT, etc.

I understand that the employer decides the SOC code, I just want know if I have any grounds to convince them on 2139 or not. My initial thoughts were that 2139 is sort of a blanket-code for IT jobs that don't fall under other RQF6 jobs, but now I'm starting to think that it only covers QA and security jobs (reading through the sample job titles and job tasks on Appendix J)

The HR/legal team of the employer says that in their understanding it's a 3131 job, but obviously we are still discussing this amongst ourselves and I want to know if I have any grounds to push them for an RQF6 code.

Or anyone knows any websites/portals where I can find the appropriate SOC code for a virtualization and data storage job? The ONS website doesn't show anything when I search for these keywords

That doesn't answer my question. Is a virtualization and data storage job covered under 2139 non-shortage list? Is 2139 a blanket code for jobs that can't be classified elsewhere as is says in title of the job code, or is it specific to QA and cyber-security jobs (which the code description leads me to believe)?

The job description and job titles I have aren't listed in there. So I need to get creative and look for a best fit.

Your employer will have to do the leg work and reading up or you. Unreasonable to expect strangers on an Internet forum to do the work for you when you have been given the lists of SOCs.

As I have said, it is your employers responsibility to do Rlmt and SOC accordingly based on their requirements and genuine vacancy needs.

The system is not designed to be flexible around what the employee wants and they job they do or to be "creative to find "best fit" SOC when you don't do a job at the required RQF level.
