When can i apply for naturalisation

Post by anjali_devi » Wed Jun 25, 2008 12:13 pm

I came to UK on WP in May 26th 2003
Then I changed to HSMP
I got my ILR on 30th April 2008
Can I apply for naturalisation on 30th April 2009 (I was in UK 5 years back on this day, i.e 30th April 2004)
or should I wait for May 26th 2009 before I can apply for naturalisation.

Thanks
Anj

I am checking this cos my passport expires on mid may 2009 and was checking whether I can avoid renewing my passport?

See also Standard requirements for naturalisation (Start of the residential qualifying period). Suggest you use the NCS.

Thanks Vinny, I will apply on 30th April 2009.

Hope that my expired indian passport would not be an issue while they are processing my application

I don't believe it would be - there is no requirement in the UK to have an unexpired passport (unless, of course, one wishes to travel outside the country and then re-enter).

I would suggest you to apply for a new passport which would cost you only £27 and you can get it within 10days. You can apply for new passport 12 months before expiration of your current passport. This would avoid all ifs and buts and you have options to travel abroad if required....I had a similar case and got new passport.....

llNicell, when he becomes a British Citizen, he ceases to be an Indian Citizen, so where is the sense applying for an Indian passport that he will not be allowed to use ... legally?

Unless anjali_devi, having made the Naturalisation application you intend to travel outside the UK before you attend your Citizenship Ceremony? You will not become British until the moment your Certificate of Naturalisation is handed to you at the ceremony.

And after the certificate needs to wait a few more weeks while application for UK passport is going through.
