I have known someone with this situation and need some advice:
The father is a Malaysian citizen with a UK residence permit and the mother is a full UK citizen. When their son was born, the father registered the birth with the Malaysian High Commision and subsequently got a Malaysian passport for the child. After that, the couple has also applied a UK passport for the child as well.
The child used the Malaysian passport to travel for the first time around 2002 to Malaysia. When coming back to UK, the immigration officer gave a small stamp on his passport stating indefinite leave to remain, since his mother is a UK citizen (at that time they did not bring/show the UK passport??). Since then they were using Malaysian passport only whenever their journey involved passing Malaysia.
After a few years, the child's Malaysian passport was renewed at the Malaysian High Commision in London. The father was told that his son's new passport need to be replaced with the new version the next time he is to visit Malaysia. In August 2006, this was subsequently done and as they travelled back to UK, the immigration officer refused to stamp indefinite leave to remain as before, stating that UK no longer do that. Subsequently only a standard entry stamp is shown on the page.
The child is only 6 years old. Their question is, since Malaysia does not allow dual nationality, does he need to renounce the Malaysian citizen?
Or can the child still travel to Malaysia with the Malaysian passport, but bringing his UK birth ceritifcate along in case the Malaysian immigration officer has any query regarding his stay in UK?
