how long to return passports in an emergency?

It is around six months since we submitted the application to extend tier 1 entrepreneur leave to remain.

I understand passports can be returned in the event of a family bereavement (in this case an uncle) - can anyone advise on how long this takes? and how one does it?

You can't travel out of the UK while n application is pending. Your application will be considered withdrawn and if your last visa has expired, you won't be able to return.

You understand wrong. Passports can be returned without cancelling your application only if you need it for some identification check requirements in the country (for example, taking the LIUK test).

You can however write in with a request for an expedited decision in such cases providing the necessary documents and justifications.
