Child born to a British father in US

Post by eclectic » Tue Jun 11, 2019 3:44 pm

Hi,

I had a baby boy born in US NJ last month. I naturalised as a british citizen back in 2016. my question is does the child become British automatically and could I apply for his passport directly or do I need to register him as a citizen using MN1 form?

please advise.

Thanks

Passport directly.
Hi mate,

I have completed the application - and it's now asking for supporting documents- not sure about grand parents section below- I don't have these for my parents or my wife's parents. we can only provide copy of their passports. will that suffice?

Grandparents’ documents
Send all of the following for both maternal grandparents:

full birth or adoption certificate
grandfather’s marriage certificate to your grandmother (if this applies)
And all of the following for both paternal grandparents:

full birth or adoption certificate
grandfather’s marriage certificate to your grandmother (if this applies)

the guidance states that You will be asked to fill in the section on grandparents’
details if your parents were:
• born outside the UK, or
• born after 31 December 1982, or
• you cannot provide sufficient information about
your parents

what should I do? explain that in a cover letter or just exclude it?

Also, not sure if below is applicable to me? Me and my wife are together and are equally responsible so I suppose this is not applicable and I don't need her to sign any letter?

f you don’t have parental responsibility, also send the following:

a signed and dated letter from the mother (or other person with parental responsibility) giving consent for the issue of the child’s new passport

will appreciate a quick advice.

many thanks!

You don't need to complete grand parent details or submit evidence.

You need evidence of your British citizenship only as you naturalised and are not British born.

Thanks Mate- not sure why are they asking for Grand parents documents in required documents list- makes it confusing but I didnt make sense as none of them are British.

thanks again.

Also I take I don't need to send anything to prove parental responsibility i.e. a signed dated letter from my wife?

The same form is used for all passport apps so a child born to British born parents would be required to complete grandparent details.

Only send what is asked for.
