Tier 2 approved but waiting for brp card

Hi, I need some urgent help. I am waiting for brp permit after approval on 12th July but need to travel urgently due to an emergency. My current brp is valid until Aug 14, 2019 and I am planning to return back on Aug 8 th to UK. Can I return on my old permit? Or does it automatically get cancelled once the new brp is issued? My wife will be joining me later in India on Aug 5. Is it possible for her to get my new permit and hand over to me in India? Can she collect it from the courier company on my behalf?

Is it worth the risk or should I postpone my trip until the brp arrives?

Appreciate any help as I am stressing out. It has been 6 working days so far.
