Job Prospects for Software Testing in UK

Post by gangaraju6 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:14 pm

Hi Guys,

Any idea about what is the job prospect for Software Testing.
To tell you some back ground I have around 6 Years of Experience in the field of Software Testing(telecom domain). I know bit of Automation using Winrunner, what do you think is the job prospects for my profile?
Are there sufficient requirements in the field of software testing.
Is there any posibility that I get offer letter when I am India itself based on my HSMP approval.
What is the salary range?

Market is pretty poor here... Especially telco.. All the finance guys who got sacked went into Telco. For lack of a better word, there's no jobs in telco. There is SOME, but very few. Maybe ~ 1 new job a week... (In contracting).. In permanent there's a few, but they have been advertising for weeks and weeks now. Therefore I wouldn't hold your breath.

You have to be a SPECIALIST in whatever you do here... So if you know winrunner, knowing a bit won't help, being an expert will. If you aren't already in Finance, then you won't get a role in finance... Generally speaking

Does this mean, India is better than UK(In terms of opportunities)..
I had pitty bad experience in the past when I had quit job in India and went Dubai and infact I was lucky enough to get the job back in my old company..
but this time I cant take the chance.. I cant quit the job in India until I have offer from any software Company in UK...
do you think even getting temporary roles in UK is tough..
How tough is to get job offer by staying in India??

Very very tough, though there are few exceptions, but that needs some special skills, not easily available in UK.
Why not float your CV on jobsites , arrange some interviews here, and visit for short period, without leaving your current job ?

At some point of time, you need to take decision.

Sorry vnvijay, please start a new thread rather than hijacking this one. (but as a side note, you can't just have worked 'one' finance project, there's plenty of people here with YEARS and YEARS in specific systems, so unless you have that, then jobs will be harder to find)

Australia is OK, but realistically, not very good either. It's following the UK market (going down)... Although there's quite a few jobs available, the rate isn't good compared to the cost of living, Sydney is quite expensive to live in and the rates are OK, but not good enough in my opinion (I am australian, came to live in the UK). Most people who leave roles in Australia find it hard to get a new role. If you do go to Australia the best place to look would be a 'software testing consulting' type company. Pay will be quite low and you'll be up against a lot of other people in a similar position to you.
The financial markets are quite uncertain and the problem is that finance skills can be used to telco, but people who haven't worked in finance rarely get finance roles.
There's LOTS of experienced testers in australia, lots come from the UK! You probably have more chance of getting a role in australia than here in the UK, but there is lots of outsourcing going on now as companies try and cut costs, therefore lots of work is being moved to India.
