Anyone have info on what is acceptable for photo for passport

Official website says it must include upper torso and shoulders

official template in Tesco (uk) says just face required

Are they strict with photos ?

The photobooth at Tesco is fine. Just follow the guidelines there.

The photos in the website above show too much torso. They will be eventually cropped in the passport and your head will fill most of the frame. Don't over think it. Follow Tesco recommendations and send them the photos.

I don't think they are that strict. After all, your biometric information matters more than whether you have a shoulder in the photo.

I normally take my photos in local photo printing shops. They are a bit more reliable than those automatic photo booths. You can always give them the instructions on the official websites and they would tailor what you need. The price is similar anyway.

Having said that, I normally just tell them it's the standard 35x45 passport photo without going into more details. I've used these photos for my UK visas, Irish visas, Schengen visas, Chinese passport, Irish passport... Never had any issue from anyone.

The cheapest and reliable option is use the DIY option of epassportphoto.com

You can upload the photo, chose the country (or dimension), download the modified sheet and print it in boots for 25c for 4 passport photos.

I never had issues with these photos.

Makes sure you upload a very good quality photo with no shadows.
