Citizenship with 1 and 1/2 year not working

Post by maverickChongo » Tue Dec 24, 2019 2:06 pm

Hi,

I am South American, my wife is Portuguese, We have been in the UK since 2010, I acquired permanent residence in 2016 via family member of an EU citizen. I am planning to apply for British citizenship now, but I am wondering whether it would be a problem that between October 2016 and March 2018 (1 year and 6 months) I stayed at home looking after my 1 year old daughter. So in the last 5 years I didn't work full time during 1 year and 6 months, the rest of the time I was a full time employee.

Do you think that would be a problem for getting the citizenship?

Any help is much appreciated!

No requirement to work. I assume you have a PR document?

Thanks Amber, yes, I have PR card. So, it doesn't matter I wasn't working for that period and therefore no contributing to NI, etc...

Naturalisation is not an immigration application - it comes under different legislation (British Nationality Act) and main requirements are residency, English/LITUK and Good Character.

Great thanks, I actually have almost every ready to apply, I was just wondering about the time I didn't work, but now that you confirm that there is no problem at all, I'll proceed to apply.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

One more question, what documents should I provide to prove I had been living in the UK for the 1 year and 1/2 that I wasn't working?

Thanks in advance

Your passport(s) with immigration stamps are your residency proof.

EU family member wouldn't have passport stamps

Apologies - missed that vital fact ...

Provide official correspondence with your name, such as Council Tax bills, or from HMRC, DWP/Pensions, etc.
