Can a person's citizenship be taken away from them after long absence?

Post by 1014772047 » Fri Mar 06, 2020 4:00 pm

As one of the condition of applying and grant of British Citizenship is your intent to live in the UK for the foreseeable future, what would happen if a person applied for their citizenship, and basically left the UK for a few years.

How long an absence is seen as it was not their intent to live in the UK for a long time?

Before 2010 there was rarely a concept of revoking nationality or ILR but now it is normal hence I can say that it is possible under the current system on operation like something under a regime.Anything is possible anytime related to immigration if you hold dual nationality .

As stated long term absence from the UK doesn't lead to deprivation of citizenship, neither for naturalised citizens nor for "natives". You may wish to look at the following document: https://researchbriefings.parliament.uk ... ry/SN06820. There are quite limited circumstances in which this can happen and you probably have heard of some high profile cases relating to criminality and terrorism.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.

There were some cases recently when people obtained naturalisation, immediately moved abroad, applied for UK passport from abroad, and then they had trouble - as passport agency and Home Office questioned their "future intentions to leave in UK".
But one only has to have such intentions at the time off application (and probably up to naturalisation date), not forever..
