Sponsor claiming Universal credit - Coronavirus situation

Dear members,

I am filling up Universal credit and child benefit forms to claim some financial help from the government as my working hours have dramatically reduced due to coronavirus outbreak. My wife got spouse visa extension FLR M in Feb. 2020 and her ILR is due in the mid of 2022.

I have never claimed any benefits in my life and probably wounldn't have bothered if my workplace was running as normal.

My plan is to claim benefits ( if my UC and CB applications is approved ) only for 3 to 4 months and then stop and cancel them; and by that time hopefully things will get back to normal.

I completely understand that my wife can't claim benefits and even if I as a british citizen claim benefits, it will or it's likely to affect her visa as I am her sponsor. Considering all that; my question is whether it will affect our application for ILR in 2022 as I mentioned I only wish to claim money for a very short period of time.

Any advice , thoughts or experience would be grately appreciated. thx a lot

You are free to claim.

Child benefit you can claim regardless anyway, no reason not to.

If must be claimed in joint names with your spouse but you will only get the single person element.

No effect on ilr.

Hi sorry to bother you and jumping in this post but my question is similar.

My ILR is due in May 2020 and my spouse is British citizen. I am self employed and can I claim maternity allowance from govt.? Will it affect my ILR application ?

Child benefit you can claim regardless anyway, no reason not to.

If must be claimed in joint names with your spouse but you will only get the single person element.

Hi,

I’ve been advised by a solicitor that UC can affect future application for leave to remain in the UK even if a British partner claims it.

He also mentioned that I can apply for NRPF condition to be removed. I have to prove that I’m in a destitute situation.

One thing I have read on the HO guidance that if I’m granted Public, they will put my wife on 10 year route.

How true is it? Any thoughts.. thx

That usually happens when neither of you is earning at least £18600. However, following benefits gives exemption from financial requirement;
• Carer’s Allowance.
• Disability Living Allowance.
• Severe Disablement Allowance.
• Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit.
• Attendance Allowance.
• Personal Independence Payment.
• Armed Forces Independence Payment or Guaranteed Income Payment under the
Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
• Constant Attendance Allowance, Mobility Supplement or War Disablement Pension
under the War Pensions Scheme.
• Police Injury Pension.

Thx Seagul, I’m talking about UC and none the benefits you mentioned come under UC.. anyway thx for your help anyway
