Name updated on BRP. What to do with previous BRP?

Post by Strapflow » Wed Sep 30, 2020 1:55 am

We updated my wife's BRP to reflect her new surname after marriage. We currently have both BRPs and the letter with the new BRP did not state what to do with the old BRP. Should we keep it, destroy it or return to UKVI?

Keep it as a souvenir?

Happy to do that if UKVI won't come after us for it :)

Without any instructions to you, what can they do?

When I got my citizenship, they asked for the BRP to be returned otherwise I'll be given a fine. Checking if there is a similar rule in this case.

Yes. I think an inappropriate policy for some ILR holders.

However, in this case, if they didn’t give any instructions to do something, then what consequences could they impose on the holder for not doing anything?

But, if keeping it as a souvenir as part of the family’s history, then keep it safe. If it’s lost or stolen, then who knows what criminals may do with it?
