First Adult British Passport - Some questions

I am sure this question has probably been asked numerous times, but I would be grateful if people could share their experience. Has anyone successfully applied for a first adult British passport when they no longer had their previous, expired passports? I have lost the passport I entered the UK with so I am not able to provide that to HMPO. Will it be a problem? I plan to enclose a cover letter to explain.

Not an issue - just enclose your current passport. I don't think there's any need write an explanation.
