Return of Original Passport after citizenship application

Hi All,

I have a question in relation to return of original passport. How long is the citizenship department taking to return the passport?

I have submitted my citizenship application on 2.11.2020. I need to travel to attend a wedding on 20.01.2021. Can someone please advise if my passport will be returned soon?

That is quite risky. While we haven’t seen any definitive answers, there seems to be quite a few occurrences that I know of where the passport was kept for more than a month or two.

The official advice has still been the same since summer - you shouldn’t submit your application if you have any travel plan any time in the future, as they cannot guarantee the prompt return of your passport.

Many thanks Littlerr for your response. What do you think should I follow up with them after couple of weeks (end of December may be) to check?

Anyone else has received back their passport in recent weeks or know someone in such situation.

I have submitted my application on 16/10/20 and still waiting for them to return my passport !!!

Also submitted in October (Anpost marked received 20/10/20) and no word yet. Recent applications seem to have taken up to around 2 months and I think the 2nd lockdown must have delayed things further

Citizenship received my application on the 7th of September. So October isn't even that bad! I'm also an EU applicant so I genuinely feel sorry for the nob-EU applicants...

Unless you have need to travel for emergency purposes, you'll probably get your passport next year, possibly February. They're apparently going through applications in chronological order. Good luck even contacting them. Their email address is nothing but a black hole.

I applied on October 1st, no news since. Didn't bother to email them. Hopefully soon

It takes 4 months on average according to the most recent reports.
I suspect that applications sent to the department during lockdown will not even be opened until lockdown ends since they can't verify passports from home.

Yup, I second that.

I did hear from one of my friends who had contacted Citizenship and apparently the email stayed 1 month time frame from last week for passport returns.

I certainly would take that with a pinch of salt coz the email template is probably an old one.

I applied for Citizenship in December 2020 and not expecting anything until April 2021.

No word yet !

What does the last sentence mean ? The once submitted before Covid?

I submitted my application (based on marriage to Irish spouse and 3+ years' residency) on 2 October 2020. I just received acknowledgement letter, passport and receipt in the post yesterday (3 Feb 2021). It seems to be moving, but very slowly!
