Does UK Home Office inform HMRC that you are a citizen?

So once you gain UK citizenship does the Home Office inform the HMRC that you have become a UK citizen?

No, they don't. It is your responsibility to inform organisations if relevant.

I just assumed that they ask for the NI number during the Citizenship application and when its granted they inform the HMRC.

The NI number is asked for to check your tax and employment history.
