I wonder if anyone has advice - I am I believe entitled to Irish Citizenship through my Irish born Grandfather. However my father ( his son) died in 1983 and his death certificate ( British citizen died in South Africa) was lost long ago and the South African authorities have no records ( 1983 Johannesburg was not the epicentre of administrative elites!). Consequently I am
Unable to provide either my fathers death certificate or notarised passport. Anyone have any idea how I can navigate this or which lawyer may be able to help BW JB
Not sure if this helps, but I know of someone with UK Citizenship who died overseas and they received a death certificate both where they died and then another one in the UK.

The UK certificate was a 'certificate of no liability to register' which acheived much of the same thing as the original death certificate, and is better than having nothing for your FBR needs. You might be able to register for this even now 39 years later (if it wasn't done at the time).

Not sure if this will help at all, but worth sending the message

Links I have found

I agree with other comments that the Birth Certificate is the most important as it's the actual proof you are entitled to citizenship

Thanks very much that’s really helpful kr j

Congrats MK! Long wait. Seems they're pretty consistent at 2 1/2 years at the moment. See you over on the passport threads soon!

Great to see that they’re coming to the end of March 2020 applications. Hopefully they’ll whizz through the lockdown months as we assume(hopefully correctly) that there was a significant drop in applications during this time.

As a December 2020 applicant...I'm hoping for a nice Christmas present  As an aside, it's a bit wild for me to think about how life felt back in 2020. That year was so difficult and the future seemed so bleak! Glad to see how things have turned around

I must be in an optimistic mood, because I see input-output's news as confirming what DFA has been saying about 2 years. If they finish all the 2020 applications this year, they're right back on track for two years. The December '20 applications will be right at two years.

My guess/hope is once they've tamed the backlog they'll scale back FBR personnel to maintain that <2 year processing time and shift to improve first-time passport processing time. I've heard reports it's 3-4 months.

I'm also a Sept 2020 applicant. If this timeline holds up, we should get ours in ~November '22. That's ~26 months. We'll get some indication of whether things are accelerating when we see summer '20 FBRs getting issued.
I hope passport applications don’t take that long now that we’re out of the summer rush. It would be lovely to have my passport before I have to submit my passport details to the airline.

I also thought that September applications would receive their fbr by mid to late November going on what they’ve said but who knows. If they received hardly any applications during lockdown (by their standards), then it’s possible it could be even sooner. If they started reviewing a normal application load then it seems unreasonable to then expect them to approve all October to December 2020 applications in the space of a month to a month and a half if they don’t reach September 2020 applications until November. Fingers crossed I suppose.

Amazing, in the last few weeks they must have updated their estimates.

They now claim 12-18 months. Very recently their page also said folks should expect more than two years, it now says around 2 years.

Interesting that they’re claiming 12-18 months. I’d suggest that is for new applicants as we know it’s not the case for most of us on here currently. Perhaps this suggests that they are thinking they’ll get through the current backlog pretty quickly as was stated earlier and allow them to get back to a quicker processing time. I wonder if we’ll ever see the days that the fbr gets back to its 3-6 month processing time.

Looking at the Wayback Machine, I don't think this is new.

I checked a few snapshots from 2020, 2021, and 2022 and they all show 12-18 months.

Since I have been leeching this site for information for years, I felt that I had a responsibility to share with the class. Now that I have something to share. I submitted my on-line application on April 11, 2019. But I didn't get all of my documents together until February, 2020 and they were accepted on February 25, 2020. If I had known that Covid and Brexit was coming, I would have acted faster. But I was expecting a 6 month turn around so I didn't hurry. On July 28, 2022, I received an email stating that they needed a copy of my mother's birth certificate and her wedding certificate. I replied (gritting my teeth) stating (as I had stated in my enclosed letter with the documents) that my mother had been born on a Spam table on the family farm. No certificate was issued. I enclosed a certificate from the county stating that no such document existed, along with her baptismal certificate and an explanation. Since I kept copies of everything that I sent in, I KNOW that I also sent in her marriage certificate. The official seal is embossed, so it is hard to make out unless it is turned sideways. The official replied that she needed a new wedding certificate. Nothing was said about the birth certificate. It took one month to get another IDENTICAL wedding certificate. I mailed it out on September 1, 2022. On September 21, 2022, I received the address check email. I suppose that it is SOP to send this email out but the cover letter of September 1, 2022 for the wedding certificate was on my embossed letterhead. On September 28, 2022, I received the congratulatory email.

Application Made: 11/4/19
Docs. Accepted: 25/2/20
Address Check: 21/9/22
Congrats Email: 28/9/22

Now, all I need to do is to get my docs back so that I can apply for my passport.

They don't manage the site that well. Often information is updated in one section but not another.

Hello,

I've been reading this forum for a while. I applied for FBR for my two boys (9 and 13) in September 2020 (documents received 30/9/20). I had resigned myself to waiting until March 2023 but I've seen posts about FBR not receiving new applications over the summer of 2020. Please can anyone expand on that as I don't remember what the situation was and I'm now getting my hopes up that I might hear soon. Many thanks

Last week a forum member called to check on an application and was told that all 2020 applications would be completed by this year's end.

It seems plausible to me.
They're working on March 2020 now. As you noted, applications were closed for the summer of 2020, so the rest of the 2020 backlog should be low.

Update on processing status from an enquiry I sent:

"In terms of regular processing times, an application registered in April 2020 is likely to be processed in October 2022. Processing times remain indicative only, and it may be processed sooner or later than this depending on available processing resources.

It is anticipated that as the current unprecedented levels of passport demand reduces, that additional staff will be reassigned to the processing of FBR applications. Accordingly it is not possible to provide a more exact processing timeframe."

For those who applied when the office was closed (most of 2021) and did not get any "documents received" confirmation email, don't worry - it appears they just weren't sending confirmation emails during this period. The office were able to confirm that my documents submitted in early February 2021 were received on 23/02/2021 when I emailed them.

Final post :D

I have completed my FBR journey today - passport card and book received - 31m and 15d (2y 7m 15d) after applying for FBR

Hopefully this helps anyone still waiting for FBR, to get some idea of when it will be over - times clearly are going down rather than up - so hopefully 31m is a distant memory soon

Genuine best of luck to those still waiting - it will come, and hopefully very soon - thank you so much for everyone on here for all the help, support and chat along the way - the world was a very different place in Feb 2020! :!:

Congrats!!

I received my passport and card last week. ( Feb2020 submission.

The passport took 4 weeks which was pretty incredible.

I had a question I hadn’t thought of until now. When I land in a country with my Irish passport does that country only see my Irish details so it will look like it’s my first flight?

It seems like they're getting through March faster than they got through January and February. So some good news.

Submitted my application on 17th Feb 2020, sent off documents shortly after but never received the confirmation of received documents. Is this cause for worry?
Application submitted online: 12th Feb 2020
Documents recieved: N/A
Confirmation of Address: 4th Oct 2022

Finally!! Also hope this can serve to reassure anyone else who never received notification that their documents were received that it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong!

They're on to applications from May 2020 already, and late May at that. Looks like things are really moving fast now.
