Maintenance Funds Proof

Hi
I had 2 queries regarding the proof required for Maintenance Funds:
1. I read on a site that its better to submit bank statements for the last 15 months rather than 3 months as required by the Maintenance Funds requirement. Is this correct?
2. Also is the letter from the bank mandatory if I submit bank statements? Many banks are a little picky about why such a statement is required. They just cite a generic reason that our policies dont allow such a letter.
Plus it just creates more avenues for a delay in application.

My PBS T1 application was rejected due to the reason that I had submitted stamped, signed bank statement which was on plain paper, without accompanying letter from bank on their letterhead.

I had applied for Tier 1 from within UK. For Maintenance Funds i just submitted my last 3 months original bank statements
