Travelling after Graduate visa application

Asking on behalf of my friend. He applied for graduate visa last week after his studies. Unfortunately, there is a family emergency due to which he need to travel outside UK. In this case what can he do to not to jeopardize his visa application? Thank you

He needs to stay put to get decision on the visa application OR
If not done biometrics and he still has enough valid leave to take him to and back from where he needs to travel to can cancel present application, travel come back with valid leave to UK and apply for graduate visa.

This is also fine if he has done biometrics. Travelling outside the Common Travel Area automatically withdraws a pending application.
