This should be your payee reference number. You can find this number in your payslips or ask your accountant

You should have received Unique Taxpayer Reference number when you registered as self-employed. If you don’t have it, call HMRC helpline.

Its not your UTRN, it is your payee reference number which you can see in your payslips, p45, p69

In payslips somewhere in the bottom you can "PAYEE Reference" and format will
111/ab11111

OP said they’re self-employed. They don’t have PAYE reference. It’s the UTR you need to put in there if you’re self-employed.

@Deryck - I am self employed, my accountant generates payslips every month, I have UTRN as well.
I got my citizenship recently. Definitely its not your UTRN, It's a payee reference number.

When I filled my application, I gave my PAYEE Number not UTRN

Are you sure you’re self-employed? Sometimes people run a one person company as if they’re self-employed. If you’re actually self-employed you cannot employ yourself. You can employ other people hence you can register for PAYE for this purpose but it would only be used to pay your staff. You can’t claim your “salary” as expenses in relation to your self-employment and it sounds like your accountant might be doing that.

It appears that HO checked your PAYE reference and accepted it however for tax purposes it is incorrect to use it for your “salary”.

With all due respect, your advice is wrong. I strongly suggest you talk to a different accountant or just call HMRC self assessment helpline.

Hi Sathyauk,

Did you tick Self-employed in the employment details section?

Regards,
