Applying naturalisation being British; confused

Post by juanpurple » Sat Feb 25, 2023 8:06 pm

Hi all,

I have a friend who wants to apply for naturalisation. He has been in the country for more than 5 years. He is British and, given that the UK is out of the EU, we find it hard to understand what the actual requisites are as the form says "this does not apply to EU/EEA citizens" (UK is a former member of EEA).

For example, if you are a non‐EU citizen making a standard application based on having 5 years residence [...] Evidence of your residency permissions that cover a CONTINUOUS PERIOD, [...] Residency permissions are evidenced by stamps in your passport, residence checker, etc.

However, as a British citizen you don't need to register to GNIB, do you still need to provide all requirements included in "2. If you are a non‐EU citizen making a standard application based on having 5 years residence:"?

What happens with the 6 weeks rule? Does it apply to British citizens?

Well, he can't provide what he doesn't have (GNIB/IRP card), so most of this paragraph (if not all) cannot apply for him. I would go through EU/EEA part, but you can send an email to ISD if you want a written confirmation.

It applies to everyone who wants to be naturalized, yes.

Even on ISD website (https://www.irishimmigration.ie/how-to- ... alisation/) it separates nonEU/EEA and "UK, EU/EEA and Swiss" nationals.

In the form, that's only enclosed under "2. If you are a non‐EU citizen making a standard application based on having 5 years residence:". Sorry we misread.

We look at the ISD website (thanks for sharing) and the form, I guess as you said, better to contact ISD for confirmation because if you go fully what it says in the form, there are lot of inconsistencies (and a website can change any time whereas the form at least have a version)

Thanks for your help!
