ILR change in rules?

Post by bookerw100 » Mon Jul 03, 2023 6:00 pm

Has anyone else read about UK government considering extending ILR route to 8 years? One of my mates mentioned it in passing but didn't have any links except a daily mail article which normally I wouldn't pay much heed to but you never know, given all the news about immigration recently.

There have been no proposals for such a thing. At this stage, these are all random rumours that must be ignored.

Yes and also with history don't UK government have to do some kind of "consultation" before announcing any change. Although as they say no smoke without fire, sometimes tabloids can get insider info before it is formally issued. Oh well I guess time will tell.

It is not proposed government policy, it is proposals by the New Conservatives, a new pressure group of mostly Red Wall Conservative MPs first elected in 2019, who want the government to go much further on reducing immigration than where the government is.

It isn't "inside information", it was launched at a public press conference. :)

I think one of the proposals is to increase the length of time for refugees to settle, and perhaps to even make them ineligible to settle permanently. I do not think it applies to economic legal migrants.

As an aside, an eight year or longer wait to naturalisation is common in other EU countries, such as Germany and Austria, even though they grant PR in five years.

When and whether the government will move on those proposals is anybody's guess.

And no, the government does not have to consult on the proposals, though they will almost certainly informally sound out business and universities, two sectors that will be the most affected.

EDIT: More details on the 12 point plan proposed. And some of them...are wow!!! IHS to be set at £2700 per year. And increasing the Minimum Income Requirement to £26200 (it has been frozen at its current level of £18600 since its introduction in 2012).

Again, remember that these are not government proposals, but that of a pressure-group of ~25 MPs.
