MN1 Application for my son. When to send original documents?

I am currently applying for citizenship for my son as we have settled status. I have completed the dossier and all i have to do now is to pay.

Do we start by uploading digital copies of all documents ?

When do we get to send original passport etc? we are going away for a month and wondering whether I should pay now or wait until we come back?

Originals are not sent to ukvi. Everything is uploaded digitally.
