Passport - does UKVI keep it?

Hi all,

Tried searching for this in the forum but didnt find a clear answer -

Do UKVCAS/UKVI send the original passport to Home Office as part of the application process or will I get it back the same day as biometrics appointment?

I will be travelling in 2 week’s time so will schedule my appointment accordingly based on the response to this question.

I half suspect they return it the same day but have heard different views from people.
