Justice Minister confirms 31,000 citizenship applications in system

In total, there were 31,000 applications for citizenship in the system at the end of September.2023


She stated that the median processing time for applications currently stands at 19 months.


Some 111 applications have been refused so far this year, down from 405 last year and a high of 1,250 in 2018.


“4,210 of these are at the final stage of the application process,” Minister McEntee said.

Up until the end of September, 10,882 people had been granted citizenship, while 111 applications had been refused.

The number of refusals are down compared to 2022, when 405 applications were refused.

This is down from a high of 1,250 refusals in 2018. The number of refusals fell to 50 and eight in 2019 and 2020 respectively, before jumping back up to 696 in 2021.

In total between 2017 and September 2023, 65,269 people have been granted Irish citizenship.


Just 3,041 applications have been refused.

Elsewhere, Minister McEntee announced this Tuesday morning that people can now apply for citizenship online.
