Which catagory of British I am?

Post by wish_uk » Sun Oct 29, 2023 4:12 pm

Dear All,

I move to united Kingdom in March 2016 under EU rules,
I got Eu Settelled status and then got british passport after applying british citizenship (naturalisation).

I am reading some articles about type of british nationals:
By decent
Otherwise than by descent.
Can someone help me understanding in simple words?

Many thanks

If you are naturalised in the UK you are British other than by descent. That’ll never change.

If a child is born to you abroad then that child will be British by descent.

If that child has a child born abroad that child won’t be British!

British nationality law is complex and I won’t be able to explain fully….

If you're naturalized, it's otherwise then by descent.

In a nutshell, if someone was born abroad to a British parent, they're British by descent -> cannot pass their citizenship onto their kids. For example, if person A, a Brit, gives birth to their child B in Pakistan, child B would not be able to pass their citizenship if their child (child C) is also born outside the UK.
Other ways of getting citizenship (naturalization/birth in UK to British parents/etc) are otherwise than by descent.

I understand that British by descent can not pass citizenship automatically!
But does this rule only apply to the child born outside the uk or also to the child born in uk?

It applies specifically to children born outside the UK, as CR001 has mentioned above.

British citizenship can be passed on automatically to only one generation outside the UK.

See this thread about how a British citizen by descent parent born in Bangladesh was unable to pass on British citizenship to his own children also born in Bangladesh. If they had been born in the UK, they would have been British citizens,
