Citizenship application advice - employment

Post by shahlastan » Wed Dec 06, 2023 1:31 am

Hello everyone, I am helping my partner with his citizenship application, however I do have a question. He is the director of a company, however he has not drawn a salary, which means the company has never issued a payslip.

Now the application asks if he is employed, he technically is however the company does not have payroll tax office reference because its just my husband who is on board.

In this instance, what are we supposed to write? Not employed?

Any kind of information would be greatly appreciated.

(Applying through EU ILR route, 20 years in the UK)

I would presume in this case he’s self employed right?

I would suggest to select the option "employed" then explain in the cover letter. Directors are not self-employed for tax purposes that I know.

I trust this is depending on how you earn your living. How do you pay tax? Wage? Dividends? Dependant?

We don't need to overthink this. Being employed is not a requirement for naturalisation - the question only is there to check where someone is employed if they are or to make them submit tax records if the applicant declares they are self employed. Most likely not a deal breaker and it only has two options to cover most of the population.

Agreed. Best be truthful and describe the situation as it is.
