ILR BRP renewal experience/Timeline + a question

Post by john353 » Sat Oct 28, 2023 9:31 pm

My wife's ILR BRP had an expiry date, end of Feb 2024. Here is the timeline.

Online application: 07/09/2023
Biometrics: 27/09/2023 at Manchester (earliest free appointment)
Confirmation email received on : 26/10/2023
Royal mail email notification: 27/10/2023
Date new BRP received: 28/10/2023 (Royal mail delivery)

Overall pleasant experience, especially since documents only needed to be scanned and uploaded. No need to submit any physical documents. I applied about 6 months before the expiry date.

New BRP has an expiry date of 31 Dec 2024 as expected. I understand BRP cards are being phased out. I wonder though, if there is no physical BRP card, how will anyone prove immigration status to airlines for travel purposes to UK after 2024?

Only people who know for certain are working for UKVI and I doubt they're willing to share it on this forum.
That's something you just have to wait and see.

Maybe they'll do a share code. Maybe they won't. We don't know.

BRPs are only issued with validity till the end of 2024. A new digital proof of status system will be introduced possibly from early 2024. After the end of 2024, that system will exclusively be used for proof of your status instead of a BRP, probably via an app similar to the current NHS app. The home office will probably update everyone on this soon

Information on eVisas as all BPRs will be phased out from 1st Jan 2025

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) are developing a digital immigration system. This means we are replacing physical documents with an online record of your immigration status. This is known as an eVisa.

What is an eVisa?
An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK. You need to register for a UKVI account to view and share relevant information about your status securely with third parties, such as employers or landlords.

Updating your physical document to an eVisa does not affect your immigration status or the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK.

In the future you’ll be able to use an eVisa to travel to the UK – you will not need to carry a physical document, except for your current passport, which must be registered to your UKVI account. Until then you will need to continue to carry your physical document if you have one.

How do I get an eVisa and a UKVI account?
If you currently have permission to stay in the UK and have either a BRP, a BRC or other physical documents to prove your immigration status, you do not have to take any action now.

Throughout 2024, we’ll provide updates on when you need to register for a UKVI account, and what you need to do.

If you need to make a new application for permission to stay in the UK, you should follow the usual application process. There will be information and guidance provided during your application process if you need to create a UKVI account.

There will be updates to this page setting out available support if you need help to register for a UKVI account.

If you have permission to stay in the UK, once you’ve completed your UKVI account registration you’ll be able to see your eVisa in the view and prove service.
