New born kid British passport for parent's with ILR

Post by wanderer05 » Sun Jan 07, 2024 2:07 pm

Hello,

We have had an addition to our family (new born baby) and was wondering if he be default qualifies as British citizen in both parents are ILR.

OR do we need to fill form for the British citizenship and then apply for passport.

Any input's will help a lot.

Many Thanks!

Congratulations!

If you/wife or both held ILR at date of birth babe is automatically British. Apply for a passport directly. Provide birth certificate and your ILR BRP. The BRP is the physical document confirming baby’s claim to British citizenship. Keep it safe.

Assuming child was born in the UK, alterhase58 have the right advice. Otherwise, kid has no automatic entitlement to British citizenship.

Thanks alterhase58 for the reply.

We both have ILR prior to baby being born. Will apply for passport accordingly.

@meself2 child was born in the UK itself.

Thank you both once again for the advice !

Make sure to store your ILR BRP safely as it will be your child's claim to British citizenship in the coming years should it ever be needed. This includes holding onto it after naturalisation if you intend to do so.

Just to add on:

What all documents we need to provide for new born passport if someone can help please:

1. Birth certificate of little one (original)
2. BRP of parents (original or copy is fine)
3. Proof of address for parents staying at same address as new born.

Anything else ?

Thanks in advance!

If someone can provide inputs would be really helpful as the passport site indicates of sending only birth certificate.

Am bit confused as how they will identify parents being on ILR

Yes you need to provide one of parents' BRP showing you had ILR at time of child's birth.

Thanks for confirmation.

Do we need to send original for BRP or we send copy for same, just confirming so the process ain't delayed.

HMPO require all original documents - make sure you keep copies.
