Naturalisation with ILR under Global Talent route

Post by androb » Thu Apr 25, 2024 7:38 am

Hi,

I have been granted ILR under the Global Talent route after living and working in the UK for 3 years.

Can I apply for naturalisation once I have lived in the UK for 5 years? Or, do I need to spend an extra 12 months?

Your need only 5 years residence which must include 12 months on ilr if you are not married to a british citizen.

British Citizenship application for an ILR holder

Post by androb » Sun Apr 28, 2024 4:40 pm

Hi,

Does an applicant for British Citizenship as an ILR holder need to be in the UK at the time of submitting the application? If so, can the applicant travel outside the UK one day after the application submitted?

Yes, you need to be in the UK at time of application. You can travel straight after, you need to attend the biometrics appointment within 45 working days of submitting though so I would advise booking that straight away suitably with your travel plans. You will also need to attend the citizenship ceremony in person once you receive the outcome.

Thanks.

Can we chose the date of the ceremony?

Is there priority service for processing citizenship applications?

It depends on your council. Some let you book, others choose for you. Private ceremonies cost extra.
Is there priority service for processing citizenship applications?
No.

You should also ask your questions nearer the time of applying, in two years.

Not possible to speed up an application. Current processing times are 6 months but it can take longer. I don't advise making plans that hinge on a guess about when you will be approved.

So you need 2 more years before you can apply for citizenship, as you can apply for citizenship after 5 years in UK (unless you have a British citizen spouse).

Naturalisation under Section 6(1) requires 5 years of residence in the UK on top of ILR (and waiting for 12 months after ILR has been granted). Naturalisation under Section 6(2) requires 3 years of residence in the UK on top of ILR and to be married to a British citizen.
