Child citizenship application - move abroad

Post by MMJAN » Sat May 18, 2024 12:28 pm

hi, we've recently applied for UK citizenship for our 6yr old as he is born and raised here (we have settled status and will not apply for citizenship as out nationality doesn't allow for dual and his little brother got it automatically). We now have an opportunity to move abroad for work. that would be for a few year tops. We haven't agreed on whether on not to take on this new job and move, but I think there are some scenarios and would like to understand the consequences:

1) we move before we receive the outcome letter -> will this make him ineligible in case he's successful?

2) we move after the outcome letter but before the invitation to pick up the certificate (no ceremony needed as he's a child) -> can we still receive the certificate? how long after the outcome letter can you usually pick-up the certificate?

3) we move after the outcome letter and after picking up the certificate, but before we can request a passport -> can you apply for a British passport at aBritish embassy abroad based on your citizenship certificate?

any help or ideas on this are much appreciated. these specific scenarios are not covered on FAQ son gov and information websites.

thanks

If the child was born in the UK and either one parent has Settled Status/ILR, the child has an entitlement to be registered as a British citizen.

Such a child can be registered even if living abroad, though that would obviously take much longer.

that unfortunately doesn't apply to him as he was born Jan 2018 and we were in the UK 4.5 yrs by that time. It should have been 5yrs to automatically be eligable, we were short approx 6 months. it is what is is. that's also the reason his brother was citizen since birth.

You’re usually automatically a British citizen if you were both:
born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983
born when one of your parents was a British citizen or ‘settled’ in the UK

You have to satisfy the statutory requirements at the time you apply, once the application is submitted you are free to travel. Of course HO has to be satisfied the child isn't immediately going to move abroad once the application is granted, so perhaps I would advise to plan to move abroad after the application is granted.
