Calling all SAP/ABAP Professionals: Job search strategy

Post by QEF8DD » Fri Feb 13, 2009 5:57 pm

About me: I am into SAP-ABAP programming for the past 7+ years.. with a top mnc for the past couple of years. Have previously worked in London for 2 years. Tier1 stamped - Jan 21.

Concerns: There aren't many posts on SAP-ABAP in this forum. Hence there is a need for the ABAPers to come together and strategize their move to the UK. What I could gather from the forum is that the number of jobs vis-à-vis other areas like Java/C is lesser and the applicants are also fewer. Means one has to put his/her heart & soul into all the interviews s/he comes across because there wouldn't be many genuine calls. I haven't done any certifications(which have a pretty big weightage in UK compared to India) in SAP but have my 2 years work exp. in UK to boast of. Not really sure whether a job as a senior ABAP'er/consultant would be available with this profile.

What can we do ? : We can make a separate/private group of ours to discuss how to shape our job search, what all additional skills(over a short period) we can gain while still in India etc.. I don't plan to travel to UK before May. Till then I plan to gain some additional experience in Netweaver, just as an addition to ABAP.In any case, it is not the best time to visit UK, so why not add to/sharpen our skills while we are still here, right ?

Looking forward to replies from all SAP-ABAP professionals(if there are any here !!).

I don't really think SAP/ABAP has much of a stronghold in UK, try Germany.

No, it's not too late. Because these jobs are outsourced unless you are truely a unique specialist usually. In the UK at least. Europe would be better, even then you'll have a hard time finding a role and I highly doubt you'll get a role here as there's people out here with huge amounts of specialised experience and they all don't have work either.

are you referring to the SAP folks or IT in general ? Do you know anything 'specifically' on the SAP job market right now? I would say recession or not, if someone is truly special in his/her field, then no matter what country or nationality he belongs to s/he won't be out of work for long !!

Both. Basically SAP is generally one of those stronger areas, however at the moment people, regardless of speciality, are losing their jobs, this includes SAP people.

Nationality doesn't make a difference, but UK experience, degree's and a UK education do. If you have 5 yrs UK experience working in SAP and a UK based qualification in it, you'll be fine. If you are fresh from another country with no UK specific experience and no UK quals, then they'll pick someone who is, because there's plenty of choice at the moment.

IT is really dead. Europe at least has large areas that are easily accessible. If you live outside of london, you'll find it hard to get around the UK for work, if you live in london you limit yourself to working only really in london. At this stage it looks like the market is going to be very dead for at least 6mths. There has been no 'end of financial year' job supply this year, only lay offs and cutbacks.

I have, for sometime now, been trying to break into the UK market, even got a couple of calls...but somehow always got stuck with the chicken and the egg (WP or UK job) cycle. I do share your sense of enthusiasm when it comes to job seeking. I am curious.. how did you go about getting your Tier 1 visa?

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but, I'm looking for a SAP R/3 ECC6 Upgrade Project Manager. It would be suitable for somebody who has around 6 years R/3 experience in the UK/EU and was planning to go back to India. Functional background needs to be in FI or MM. This is a long term term project with the initial contract being for 1 year. The posting is in the Gulf States.
