Help needed Urgent - English Language points

Post by kastor12 » Mon Mar 23, 2009 7:46 pm

Hi,

I am applying for the UK visa under tier1.
For the requirement of getting 10 points for English language, i am filling it under:

I have a qualification that was taught in English

The problem is that i have done my Bachelors from IIT Roorkee and when i select it from the point calculator given on the UKBorderAgency site, it is showing two colleges with same name in two different states U.P and uttarakhand.
For U.P only, it is giving 10 points not for uttarakhand but my college is in uttarakhand.
Actually it was never in UP but somehow it is giving points only for UP.

I don't know if this is some mistake from their side, issue is what should i do, get those 10 points for UP.
On my bachelors degree, only the institute name is there, state name is not mentioned.

Please give me advice on this.

I don't know why this happens only to me  :( [/list]

If you are not sure, you can get letter of comparison from NARIC.

As said chetanojha if not sure then get a letter of comparison from NARIC. Its worth to spend 40 pounds instead of waisting 750 pounds and your precious time by using your own assumption. If you are not sure then this may put you in high risk. You can better think about your position.

NARIC letter will only tell you if it compares with a British Bachelor's degree equivalent. I don't think it will tell you if language requirements are met or not. If you're not in a hurry, then probably write to UKBA, or worst come to worst, take up TOEFL/IELTS.

Sorry, don't know what else to suggest...

That's right. I don't think NARIC listing is evidence for or against English language proficiency.

Hi drjabber ,

Dont think you need english letter .

Take a look at the application form and the section for english requirement .

They are asking if the degree is registered in points calc .

You dont need any proof for that .

Proof was needed for HSMP not tier1

Proof that the degree was taught in English is still required. The condition is satisfied as follows:

(1) One must score 10 points on the points calculator; &
(2) One has to provide the degree itself, which along with (1) above froms the proof.

See this from the guidance notes:
Degree taught in English
186. An applicant may provide evidence that he/she holds a degree which is equivalent to United Kingdom Bachelors level or higher and which was taught or researched in English to a particular level as evidence of his/her English language ability.
IIT Roorkee (as Roorkee Engineering College) was in UP initially and thereafter after the division of the state it now falls in Uttaranchal. There seems to be some discrepency on the points calculator but as it is based on the information provided by NARIC the following are the options for you:

(1) write to NARIC & HO highlighting this issue and see what response you get.
(2) Go ahead and use IIT Roorkee under UP - this would be factually wrong (mis-representation in that you did not do the course from UP)
(3) write one of the prescribed test - means additional expense but will give you peace of mind.
regards,
push
