Long Stay in Greece

My wife and I are planning on spending over the 90 day limit in Greece. Do we have to apply for a long stay visa for Greece before we leave the states? Also when we leave Greece can we then travel around the other Schengan countries for 90 days or have we used that up by staying in Greece?
